When to plant cucumber in New Zealand

Timing matters in New Zealand, where the warm north and the cooler south are weeks apart. Cucumber needs warm soil above 16 degrees, so wait until frost has passed. Sow or plant in these months for your region:

Position and soil

Cucumber wants full sun, at least six hours a day, and shelter from wind. It is hungry and thirsty, so dig in plenty of compost or aged manure before planting. Aim for free-draining soil rich in organic matter with a pH around 6.0 to 7.0.

Sowing and planting

Cucumber dislikes cold soil and root disturbance. You have two options:

• Sow direct: push seed about 2 cm deep into warm, prepared soil once it has heated up. This avoids transplant shock.
• Raise seedlings: in cooler regions start seed in pots or under cover three to four weeks ahead, then plant out gently once the soil is warm. Use larger cells so you barely disturb the roots.

Seed germinates in about seven days in warm soil. Most varieties are picking-ready in roughly 60 days. In cool regions a glasshouse or tunnel house gives a longer, more reliable season.

Spacing and support

Spacing depends on the type. Trellised vining cucumbers grow up, so they sit closer together, about 30 to 45 cm apart in a row. Bush types sprawl sideways and need about 45 to 60 cm. Use the calculator above to match your bed.

Vining types crop better on a trellis. A panel of netting or wire mesh 1.5 to 2 metres tall is plenty. Cucumber climbs with tendrils and grabs any thin support. Growing up keeps fruit clean and straight, improves airflow to keep powdery mildew down, and saves space. If you grow on the ground, mulch heavily so fruit sits on straw, not soil.

Watering and feeding

Even moisture is the single biggest factor in sweet fruit. Cucumber is mostly water, and any check from drying out then flooding shows up as bitterness and misshapen fruit. Water deeply, keep the soil evenly moist through summer, and mulch well. Water at the base in the morning so leaves dry quickly. Feed fortnightly with a liquid fertiliser once flowering starts.

Pollination

Most cucumbers carry separate male and female flowers on the same plant. Bees move pollen between them, and the female flowers are the ones with a tiny cucumber behind the bloom. Early on, plants often throw mostly male flowers, so be patient. If bees are scarce, hand pollinate by brushing pollen from a male flower into a female flower. Some modern varieties are all-female or parthenocarpic and set fruit without pollination, which suits a glasshouse.

Companion planting

Grow cucumber near beans, corn, nasturtium, sunflower, marigold and radish. Keep it away from strong-smelling herbs like sage.

Common problems

Bitter fruit

Heat and irregular watering stress the plant. Keep water steady, mulch, feed regularly, and pick young.

Powdery mildew

White powder on the leaves. Give it airflow with a trellis, water the soil not the leaves, and remove affected leaves. A milk spray of one part milk to nine parts water helps early.

Fruit shrivels at the tip

Poor pollination or dryness. Keep the water up and let the bees in, or hand pollinate.

Aphids and whitefly

Harvest

Pick young and pick often. Cucumber is at its best while firm and before the skin dulls. Leaving oversized fruit on the vine turns it seedy and bitter and tells the plant to stop. Harvesting every day or two at peak keeps the crop coming for weeks.
