Hyline Brown Chickens: The New Zealand Keeper's Guide
~300 brown eggs a year · Light hybrid (~2 kg) · common NZ hybrid
Hyline Browns are one of the brown hybrid layers that dominate New Zealand backyards, alongside the Brown Shaver. They are an easy, productive, beginner-friendly hen sold as point-of-lay pullets across the country.
Eggs and laying
Close to an egg a day in the first year, well over 300 in total, and they carry on laying through winter. Production eases after the second or third season.
Temperament
Calm and settled, easy to handle and good around children. They very rarely go broody.
New Zealand climate fit
Hardy from Northland to Southland and dependable through the cold months. Provide shade in summer heat and a dry coop through wet winters.
Care notes
Simple to keep, with no special needs. As heavy layers they need good layer feed and a calcium source, and like other hybrids can face reproductive issues with age.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are Hyline Browns the same as Brown Shavers?
They are different commercial strains of brown layer but behave almost identically for a backyard keeper, both calm, hardy and laying around 300 eggs a year. Either is a great first hen.
Do Hyline hens lay in winter?
Yes, better than heritage breeds. Commercial brown hybrids are bred to keep laying through the shorter, colder days when other breeds pause.
What do I feed a Hyline?
A complete layer feed with enough calcium, plus access to grit or shell. Heavy laying draws on their reserves, so cutting corners on feed shows up fast.
