ISA Brown Chickens: The New Zealand Keeper's Guide
~300 brown eggs a year · Light hybrid (~2 kg) · widely available in NZ
The ISA Brown is the other brown laying hybrid you will see all over New Zealand, very close in performance and temperament to the Brown Shaver. It is a friendly, productive hen bred for one job, eggs, and it does that job superbly.
Eggs and laying
Around 300 or more brown eggs in a strong first year, laid steadily including through winter. Like all production hybrids, output falls away after a couple of seasons.
Temperament
Affectionate and people-oriented, often the friendliest bird in the run and quick to come to you. Great with kids and easy to handle.
New Zealand climate fit
Hardy nationwide and reliable through the cooler months. Shade in the warm north and a dry, draught-free coop in the cold south are all they really ask.
Care notes
Low-maintenance and undemanding. The heavy laying load means quality layer feed and grit or shell for calcium are important, and they can develop reproductive problems as they age.

Frequently Asked Questions
ISA Brown or Brown Shaver?
They are near-identical for a backyard keeper, both calm, hardy brown hybrids laying around 300 eggs a year. Buy whichever your local supplier has as healthy point-of-lay pullets.
Do ISA Browns go broody?
Rarely. Like other commercial hybrids they have had broodiness bred out of them, so they seldom sit, which is part of why they lay so consistently.
How long do ISA Browns lay well?
Two to three strong years, then production tails off. They can live for several years beyond that as friendly pets.
