Monthly Planting Calendar

Auckland has a warm temperate, near-subtropical climate with high humidity and mild, frost-free winters in most suburbs. Spring and summer are the main growing seasons; winter is slow but rarely stops growth near the coast. Last frost risk is low in coastal Auckland but real in inland and southern pockets, so tender crops still wait until Labour Weekend in colder gardens. Humidity drives fungal pressure, so airflow and resistant varieties matter. Subtropical crops do better here than anywhere else in New Zealand outside Northland.

Frequently Asked Questions

What can I grow in Auckland?

Auckland's warm temperate, mostly frost-free climate supports a very wide range: vegetables, herbs, fruit trees, citrus, and some subtropicals. The key is matching crops to the season and managing summer humidity. Use the monthly guide above for what to plant now.

When is the best time to start a vegetable garden in Auckland?

Almost any time, thanks to mild winters. Spring is easiest for beginners with warm soil and long days, but many cool-season crops go in through autumn. Pick a spot with six hours of sun and enrich the soil with compost.

Does Auckland get frost?

Coastal and central Auckland is largely frost-free, but inland and southern suburbs get light frosts, so hold tender crops like tomatoes and basil until Labour Weekend in colder pockets. Humidity, not cold, is the bigger challenge for most Auckland gardens.
